Hosokawa Ryu Hyoho – 細川流兵法

HOSOKAWA RYU KENPO

The military arts (武芸, Bugei) have a long and complex history, ignored by myth and legend and made even more inaccessible by documentation that was never produced, did not survive, or was deliberately obscured. Military training in Japan predates recorded history. Between the Heian and Sengoku eras, the role of the samurai (侍, Japanese warrior) in Japanese society increased. Tactics, weapons and training evolved with them. However, the most fundamental changes occurred in the modern period, when the samurai and their bugeys adapted to peace. Until then, the Samurai were primarily warriors, people who made their living from battle, and the Bugei were the first and main art of war. The peace imposed by the Tokugawa transformed most samurai into ruling aristocrats, and when the samurai was no longer just a warrior, martial arts survived the end of the warrior class and remained a part of Japanese culture. The classic Bugei that are still practiced are pieces of living history that continue to propagate the philosophies of the samurai who disappeared over a century ago.

By studying them, we can learn much about how the warrior class acquired core values, beliefs, and physical abilities, as well as attitudes and skills. A better understanding of Bugei enriches our knowledge of medieval and early modern Japanese warriors and offers us new insights into samurai culture. The essence of RYUHA There is no typical Bugei because traditional schools vary greatly in tactics, philosophy and the vocabulary with which they express their ideas. However, there is enough consistency between them that a close examination of ryuha is an effective way to understand Bugei as a general phenomenon in Japanese culture. The essence of Ryu-ha (流派, Martial Style) such as Hosokawa Ryu (細川流, Hosokawa Style) can be found in the transmission of Ryuga (流儀, Method) - Kata (形, Form), the oldest teaching and learning methodology in traditional Bugei . Basically, Kata represents a form of training in which students practice combinations of techniques and counter-techniques, or sequences of combinations, organized by Ryu (流, style) teachers since the school's founding. This type of practice ensures continuity from generation to generation, even in the absence of written transmission. The importance of standard practice comes from the belief that it is the most effective tool for transmitting knowledge from teacher to student. Ryu-ha's katas form a living catalog of his curriculum and syllabus. The most important lessons cannot be conveyed through explicit explanations; they must be experienced directly. Technique and principle are indivisible, like the body and its shadow; but the emphasis should be on refining the technique. The reason for this is that this principle will reveal itself spontaneously in response to progress in technical training.

HOSOKAWA RYU BUJUTSU

According to the Hosokawa family, the clan's sword art was built on techniques and strategies from the four great martial arts traditions; Yagyu Shinkage Ryu (柳生新陰流), Niten Ichi Ryu (二天一流), Enshin Ryu (円心流) and Katori Shinto Ryu (香取神道流). They are carefully preserved to this day and are still practiced by some family members. The progression of Hosokawa Shinkage Ryu (細川新陰流) occurs in three stages; Shoden (初伝, First Transmission), Chuden (中伝, Indirect Transmission) and Kuden (口伝, Oral Transmission), and finally one can reach the level of Menkyo (免許, Traditional Permission) when one becomes an accomplished Ryu teacher.

Membership in Hosokawa Ryu Hyoho (細川流兵法) is open to anyone interested in classical Japanese martial art and culture and supports the association's goals and views regarding the martial art and its teaching and practice at the Shihanke Hiroshi Hosokawa School in Osaka, Japan.
